Galveston, Texas is not too far from Houston and locals spend time there on the weekends just to get out of the city. However, there are many tourists who also enjoy traveling to Galveston for holidays from around the country. At one time, Galveston was known as a dirty beach, but cleanup has been successful and the area is making a comeback.
Galveston has also been through quite a few hurricanes during the past 100 years. In fact, one hurricane in the early part of the 1900s devastated the area and killed hundreds of residents. One of the problems is the fact that Galveston is an island, so residents who decide to stay for an approaching hurricane cant leave once it hits.

Many of the hotels in Galveston were built right on the ocean, but a few have stood the test of time and a centurys worth of inclement weather. Galveston also has a wonderful area to buy fresh seafood brought in daily by the local fishermen. Since Galveston is located on the Gulf of Mexico, the shrimp and fish are plentiful and seafood restaurants are everywhere on the island.
Many people enjoy their entire holiday relaxing in Galveston, Texas. Often, visitors just want to take a break from life and spend their time on the beach or in the water. Galveston really does delight tourists yearly as the summer season brings warm weather and hot sand just waiting to be discovered.
